Sunshine Coast mountain biking an ideal off-road adventure
Mountain biking has a strong following on the Sunshine Coast and is also growing as a niche attraction for visitors who are keen to get the adrenaline pumping while enjoying the landscapes away from the coastline.
Fans of the gruelling and adventurous extreme sport have the choice of local tracks – in locations and landscapes as varied as the Glasshouse Mountains, Mapleton and Nambour, as well as Caloundra and the Noosa Hinterland.
Mountain biking is described by local riders as low impact on the joints (particularly the knees), fun, challenging and easily-progressive. A lot of riders turn to mountain biking due to health issues and concerns with facing traffic on the rods.
New riders can start on shorter rides on the easier trails and, as they get more confident and fitter, they can do longer rides, bigger climbs and attempt the more advanced trails.
Suitable trails in the hinterland – particularly around Mapleton, Montville and Maleny – are available, but a little in short supply.
Mapleton was a mountain biking mecca in the 90s, with national level races being held in the Mapleton Forest, but now there are primarily fireroads, the downhill track and a single-track trail called ‘Turpentine’ or ‘The Magic Mile’ near the Mapleton National Park day use area.
The promotion of mountain biking as a tourist attraction is something that is growing world-wide, but has been largely an untapped opportunity on the Sunshine Coast.
The growing following of mountain biking as a fitness pastime has resulted in a surge in memberships over recent years at the Bush Rangers mountain biking club.
On the Sunshine Coast, there are four main ‘single track’ trail networks: Wooroi in Tewantin, Sugarbag in Caloundra, Ferny Forest near Landsborough and Parklands near Nambour. There are also plenty of fire roads and multi-use paths around the area such as the Glasshouse Mountains, Mapleton and Ringtail Forest, as well as advanced downhill trails at Mapleton and Beerburrum.
